Chapter 25: Last Money
I didn't let him in.
I stepped out onto the top step instead and pulled the door almost shut behind me, the way I had on Marlborough Street.
The rain was soft and steady.
Across the road the private garden dripped behind its black railings.
A man in a waxed jacket was walking a spaniel along the pavement, and he slowed down.
"How did you find the house?" I said.
"It's on your marriage certificate. It was in the magazine." Dorian wiped rain out of his eyes. "Laurel gave them a copy."
Of course she had.
"You need to go to the airport, Dorian."
"I can't." He laughed, and it came out like a cough. "That's what I'm telling you. I bought a one-way. I've got eleven pounds and a phone at four percent."
"Why would you do that?"
"Because I wanted to say it somewhere you couldn't just shut a door on me in front of my wife."
"You don't have a wife."
"No." He looked down at the wet step. "She filed Tuesday. Her lawyer called it abandonment. I didn't even fight it. What would I fight for? The ottoman?"
A window went up across the street, three floors up.
A woman in a dressing gown looked out.
In Edinburgh, it turned out, people watched from windows too.
"I lost the job," Dorian said. "You know that. The car went back Wednesday. I sold the watch to pay the guy in Revere. I sold the ring I bought you, the one from the pencil cup. Did you know I went back for that? After. I went back the same afternoon and the clerk gave it to me in an envelope." His voice cracked. "And I sold it to buy a ticket to Scotland."
