Chapter 27: Laurel

The elevator came.

The doors opened on an empty car and closed again.

Neither of us got in.

Down the corridor, Alistair had sat back down on his plastic chair, a long way off, reading nothing on his phone.

"You had someone to sell," I said. "You had me."

Laurel laughed without any sound.

"I did, didn't I." She looked at the folder against her chest. "I was good at it."

"Why?"

"You want the truth? Out loud? In a hospital?"

"Yes."

She was quiet a while.

A nurse went by with a cart and looked at us and kept going.

"I was thirteen when he married my mom," Laurel said. "You were fifteen. You had freckles everybody loved and a mother who painted and a whole house that smelled like turpentine. Every other weekend I'd come into that house and you'd be up in that studio with her, the two of you, drawing. And nobody ever asked me up."

"You never asked."

"I know." She shrugged one shoulder. "I hated you for it anyway. It was easier than asking."

She pushed her hair back with her free hand.

"So when he called me into his office and said Kincaid wants Faye and Faye won't go, I didn't even think about it. I said I'll do it. I'll walk in on Dorian's arm. I said it before Dorian did." She looked at me. "I wasn't twenty-five and stupid. I knew exactly what I was doing. I wanted to see your face."
