The Crown Arena was half dark at two o'clock on Wednesday, with work lights burning over the empty seats.

The Sunset Music Awards were three days off, and four hundred people filled the floor for the final rehearsal.

Stagehands, camera crews, presenters in sweatshirts, and nominees waiting their turn sat in clumps along the front rows.

Devon and I came in through the side door with the awards' executive producer, a tired man with a headset around his neck.

He had called Maxine on Tuesday, after the rights notice.

"I'll let you in," he had said, "if you promise me nobody screams."

"I never scream," I had said.

Onstage, Lexi Rotherhithe stood alone under a single white light.

Behind her, a screen displayed her name in gold letters.

She wore a silver dress and a microphone clipped to her collar, and she looked beautiful and terrified.

Hank sat in the third row, with his arms crossed.

He had no badge, and he had come in as Lexi's guest.
