Four minutes before air, I stood in the dark wing of the Crown Arena with my hands wrapped around a bottle of water.
The Sunset Music Awards had sold out its eleven thousand seats, and I could hear every one of them breathing.
Devon stood next to me in a black suit with the collar open.
On the stage ahead, the broadcast countdown clock ran backward in red numbers.
"You're shaking," he said.
"I'm not."
"Your water is shaking."
I looked down, and the water was.
"I have spent three years making sure nobody looks at me," I said.
"I know."
"Now eleven thousand people will."
"They'll look at the person who wrote the best song on the record." He touched my chin. "You'll be fine."
"What if I'm flat?"
"You've never been flat. That was always Lexi's job."
I laughed so hard I had to turn my face into his shoulder.
The stage manager waved at us.
"Mr. Ransom. Ms. Quinn. You're on."
We walked out into a white wall of light.
The crowd roared for Devon, and I stopped breathing.
He led me to center stage, where a small black piano stood waiting under a spotlight.
