Chapter 24: Chapter 24
Devon's tour opened on Saturday, January sixteenth, in a stadium with forty thousand seats.
An hour before the doors, he found me in the empty production office with a printed sheet in his hand.
It was the back cover of the album, with the track list down the left and the credits down the right.
Every line was filled except one.
"Produced by," it said, and then a blank.
"I left it empty," Devon said. "I told the printer I'd bring the page back."
"You asked me what it should say."
"I did."
I took the pen from his breast pocket.
I looked at the blank for a long time.
Then I wrote my name in my own handwriting.
"Laurel Quinn."
He looked down at it.
"Just you," he said.
"You sang. I produced."
"Hank Dorsey sits in county jail," he said. "And you are the first person I've ever wanted to be credited next to."
"Then it fits."
He laughed, wet and breathless, and kissed me against the desk.
Someone knocked on the production office door and called through it, "Fifteen minutes to house."
