She straightened up off the car when she saw me.
Her nose was red from the cold.
"How did you get here?" I asked.
"Bus. Two buses." She pushed her hands into her pockets. "Grandma doesn't know."
"Did you go in to see him?"
"No." She looked at the jail doors. "I got here and couldn't."
We stood there with the slush soaking into our shoes.
A guard came out for a smoke and went back in.
"I have something for you," Mia said.
She took an envelope out of her coat.
It was a bank envelope, soft from being handled.
I opened it.
Five hundred-dollar bills.
"I got a job at Dough Street," she said. "The bakery by Grandma's. I work Saturdays and Sundays. Five a.m."
"You hate mornings."
"I really, really hate mornings." Her voice shook. "It took me eleven weeks."
"Mia."
"There was never a tutor," she said. "I lied. I'm sorry."
