Chapter 12: The Healer's Test

I did not tell Torin about my hand until after breakfast.

I had spent twenty minutes at the bathroom mirror turning it over.

The light was gone, and my skin was normal, and my hand was cold.

Then I went downstairs, stood in the kitchen doorway and said it plainly.

"My hand glowed this morning. Gold."

Torin put his coffee cup down.

"Show me."

"It stopped."

"Then we're going to the healer."

"Why?"

"Because Hazel talks to deer, Jonah growls like a grown wolf, and you just lit up your own glasses." He rubbed his face.

"And I have not felt this quiet in my chest since I was a boy."

I stared at him.

"Quiet how?"

"My wolf. He has been loud since I was seven, and this week is the closest I've come to peace."

"That is why you want the healer."

"It's why I want to know what you did to him."

"I did nothing."

"Then I want to know what was done to us," he said, and picked up his keys.

The healer lived in a stone cottage at the edge of Hollowbrook land, an hour from the lodge.

She was a small, bent woman with white braids, and she opened the door before we knocked.

"I wondered when you'd come," she said to me.
