Chapter 12: Tonight

I didn't answer right away.

I wanted to look at him first.

The firelight was on one side of his face. His hair had fallen over the white band. His thumb was still on my pulse, not moving, waiting.

He'd waited in a stone for ten years. He could wait a moment longer.

"Kerensa's at her mother's until tomorrow," I said.

"I know."

"You know?"

"I asked her." He had the grace to look a little embarrassed. "Before the race. In case."

"In case of what?"

"In case you ever looked at me the way you've been looking at me since the beach."

I laughed. It came out shaky.

"I have terms," I said.

"Of course you do."

"You can't lie on your back. Your casts."

"I'm aware of my casts."

"And you don't take those casts off."

"I wouldn't dare." His mouth curved. "Anything else, Beastwright?"

I put my hand on his chest, over the line of black scales under his shirt.

His heart was going as fast as mine.

"Yes," I said. "I want you too. Come to bed."

He stood up off the rug and pulled me up with him, and kissed me before I was all the way on my feet.

It wasn't the kiss at the clinic door.

That one had been surprised.

This one knew exactly where it was going.

He kissed me across the front room and through my bedroom door, and my heel hit the bedpost, and he laughed into my mouth and said, "Sorry, sorry," and didn't stop.

He sat on the edge of my bed and I stood between his knees.

His hands came up under my skirt first.

His fingers dragged my wool stockings down and I stepped out of them.

Then he unbuttoned my dress from the hem up, one button at a time, watching my face.

I pulled the pencil out of my hair and shook it loose.

His hands went into it before it finished falling.

"Ten years I wondered what this looked like," he said.

"And?"

"I was not prepared."

I climbed onto his lap with the dress open to my waist.

His mouth went to my breast through my shift.

I gasped and grabbed his hair to hold him there.

"Tell me what you want," he said against the cloth.

"You," I said.

He pulled the shift down off my shoulder and got his mouth on bare skin.

I arched into him without meaning to.

"Look at you." His hands were shaking a little.

"Morvran."

"Tell me what you want."

I pulled back and met his eyes.

"Your hands on me. Your mouth. Then your cock inside me."

His breath went out of him in a rush.

"Longer than I planned to admit."

I finished the buttons myself and shrugged the dress off.

His hands were on my bare back under my shift and then the shift was gone too.

I rode against his lap and felt him hard under his trousers.

I reached down and worked the buttons open and got my hand around his cock.

His whole body went rigid.

"God," he said.

I stroked him slow and watched his face come apart.

"Talk to me," I said. "You said you would."

"Your hand is small." His voice was wrecked. "I've thought about it. For months. Every time you held a bandage."
