Chapter 24: The Altar

I didn't go alone.

I ran back up the cliff stairs with the note in my fist and woke Morvran and put it in his hand.

He read it twice.

Then he got up and started dressing without a word.

"She said alone," I said.

"She can say what she likes," he said. "You're the champion. I'm half the Watch. If I'm not at that altar tonight, she'll know you told me. If I am, I'm just doing my duty."

"And if she hurts Kerensa because you're there?"

"Then she was always going to." He buttoned his shirt. "She doesn't take Kerensa to give her back, Elowen. She takes her to make you kneel."

He was right.

I hated that he was right.

We went down to the clinic.

The girl by the stove from the meeting was already there, with a dozen feeders, white-faced, looking at the kicked-over lantern.

"They came in the night," she said. "Three of the dragon's house students. They had a sack. We were asleep."

"Is the plan still on?"

She looked at the lanterns on the floor. Then at me.

"Kerensa's our friend too," she said. "It's on."

The day went slowly and then much too fast.

At dusk, Morvran and I walked up the headland path to the Rift Altar.
