They carried him down the headland on a hurdle, six fishermen and the bear from the semifinal.

They carried me on another one, though I swore at them the whole way.

The healer met us at the menagerie infirmary door in her nightgown.

She looked at the black scales over my ribs and said a word I'd never heard her say.

Then she looked at Morvran.

"I can stitch you," she told me. "I don't know what to do for him. Nobody does. There's nothing in any book about a Tail-Eater who stops halfway."

"I know what to do for him," I said.

"You've got a hole in your side."

"Then stitch it fast."

She did. Kerensa held the lamp and my hand, and I bit a leather strap so I wouldn't scream at either of them.

The scales Morvran had laid on me slid off onto the floor as the healer worked.

"Huh," said the healer.

Then she bandaged me tight from armpit to hip and told me not to move for a week.

I got up as soon as she turned her back.
