Chapter 29: Licensed

"I'm not going to ask you to stay," I said.

He went still beside me on the harbor wall.

"And I'm not going to the capital," I said. "I've got a clinic. I've got forty people who need the next year to go right. I've got a license to earn in a month."

"So that's no."

"That's me telling you where I'll be." I squeezed his hand. "You're six hundred years old. You've been in a stone and a pit and eight versions of this year. You'll think of something."

He looked out at the water for a long time.

Then a slow, terrible grin spread across his face.

"Oh," he said. "Oh, they're going to hate this."

He flew to the capital the next morning, and came back two days later looking extremely pleased with himself.

He wouldn't tell me why.

"You'll see," was all he said. "Be at the clinic on the first of the month."

Graduation was the last week of summer.

The ring had been swept and hung with banners.

The whole third year sat on benches on the sand, in clean gray wool, facing the Headmistress's platform.

The stands were full of families.

Mine was in the front row.

Kerensa's mother was there in her best shawl, with the old fisherman and his dog.

Half the harbor had brought the GO MUD SNAKE banner.
