Chapter 13: What He Signed
"No," Linnea said again, and held the folded will against her chest.
Aldric stood in the vault door, and the lantern light shook on his face.
"That paper is the only plan I have," he said.
"Then you need a better one."
Perpetua took her lantern and climbed the stair without a word.
Linnea walked up the ninety steps with the will in her fist, and Aldric followed two steps behind.
She did not stop until they stood in her own room with the key turned in the lock.
She laid the paper on the table between them.
"Read me the second line," she said.
"You have read it."
"Read it to me."
"It says I will pay it," Aldric said, and his voice did not break.
"Six women paid it, and you want to be the seventh payment."
"Six women paid it because the dukes who loved them could not stop it." His hands closed on the chair back. "I can."
"You can leave me with a child and a dead husband."
"I can leave you alive."
"You promised me the right to leave when the child is born." She kept her eyes on his. "A dead man can't open that door for me. You'd be taking my choice with you."
