Chapter 23: I Was the Woman

Every camera in the ballroom swung to the riser, and the flashes went off.

Elliott stood in the lamplight with the mask in his hand and his whole face bare.

The scar ran from his jaw to his collar, white and ridged and plain.

He did not turn it away.

Nobody in the ballroom said a word.

"Thank you for coming," he said, and his voice cracked in the middle, and the room waited for him to finish.

Channing walked to the center of the stage, through the drifting smoke.

He had found his smile again, the wide one with all the teeth.

"Everyone, please," he said, hands up. "Please stay calm. There has been a technical error, and as you can see, my cousin is very distressed."

"Members of the board," he said, louder. "This is exactly what I told you."

I was already moving.

I went down the center aisle through six hundred silver masks, up the three steps, and across the boards where the flame had been.

The boards were still warm through my shoes.

I took the microphone out of the stand.
