Chapter 7: The Cut List
On Monday at nine, my stage manager came out of Paulette's office with a cardboard box in her arms.
"It's not what you think," she said, crying. "It's a role review. They said it's just a review."
"Put the box down."
"She told me to start thinking about my references."
I looked past her.
Through Paulette's glass wall, I could see the lighting designer sitting stiffly in the visitor chair, and the runner waiting by the door with her coat already on.
Paulette saw me looking.
She lifted one silver nail and waved.
I did not go through the glass door.
I went to the elevator, and I rode up to the fifty-first floor, and I put my phone in the guard's tray.
"He's in a meeting," the guard said.
"I'll wait."
"It could be an hour."
"Then I'll wait an hour."
I did not have to.
The door at the end of the hall opened after four minutes, and Elliott stood in the frame in a black suit, with his glove on.
"Ms. Hanrahan."
"Mr. Sorrell. I need two minutes."
"You have them."
I walked in and did not sit.
"Paulette Gaines is giving my team role reviews," I said. "There are four people on her list. Every one of them works on the gala."
His face did not change.
"I don't know about a list."
"It's a spreadsheet called Redundancies. I haven't seen it, but my stage manager has a box in her arms."
"What do you want me to do?"
"I want you to take them off it."
"All four?"
"All four, and I want you to do it in front of her."
