Federico's POV

I had planned for most things at that table.

I had not planned on Dario's father standing up without being asked.

He was a heavy man, and age had made him heavier, with a mechanic's thick hands and a cheap brown suit that had not been cleaned for the occasion.

He looked at Ruggeri, who had hidden him there for three weeks.

Then he looked at the chairman.

"I was in the Lincoln," he said.

Teresa made a small, strangled sound at the end of the table.

"Sit down," Ruggeri said.

"No."

"Sit down, you old fool."

"Last night your men put my son on the floor of a loading bay," Dario's father said. "Boys he trained.

"You told me they wouldn't touch him."

Ruggeri's smile came back, thin and wrong.

"He turned on his own side. That is his business."

"He's my boy."

The chairman folded his hands.

"Mr. Sabatini," he said. "Say what you were doing in the Lincoln."

Dario's father wet his lips.

"Sixteen years ago the boss called me to his office. He said the engineer from the Orsini side had a letter in his drawer. The engineer would not sign a false inspection on the Ruggeri warehouses, and he'd said so to the old man.

"The boss said, see to it before the week is out.

"I followed their Buick on the shore road, and I put it into the guardrail."

Nobody at the table moved.

"I didn't mean to kill the woman," he said. "Only him."
