Chapter 22: Launch Day

I stood in the headlights with a motor crate in my arms.

My mother saw me.

She looked straight at me across forty yards of white sand, and then she turned her back and handed somebody a water bottle.

My father didn't turn.

He just stood there in his Thornbury polo and looked at me.

Waylon took the crate out of my arms.

"Inside," he said. "You can stare at them in the morning."

I didn't sleep much.

At six the sun came up over the mountains.

Inspection started at eight.

Three judges walked the row of tents with clipboards, one team at a time, and every team's motor designer had to stand by the rocket and answer questions.

Thornbury was tent nineteen. We were tent forty.

Word had gotten around. The hearing had been in the papers in Dallas, and somebody had posted the entry list with both names on it.

By the time the judges got to tent nineteen, there was a crowd three deep.

Annika stood by her rocket in a white visor and a Thornbury polo.

Lyndon stood at the very back of the tent, alone, by the cooler.
