I applied that Friday from the motel's broken lobby computer, with Waylon reading over my shoulder.
"You spelled propulsion wrong."
"I did not."
"Second paragraph."
I had.
The email came back the next Wednesday, while I was sitting on Gran's dock with my feet in the water.
We'd like to offer you a place in our July session.
I read it out loud.
Gran was on the next piling with a cast net.
She dropped it.
Then she walked straight off the end of the dock into the bay in her coveralls.
She came up spitting and swearing.
"What are you doing?"
"Celebrating," she yelled. "Get in here."
I got in.
So I spent that summer at Gran's again, and I drove up I-45 to Clear Lake every morning at six.
It was forty minutes from the shrimp docks to the gate at the Johnson Space Center.
The first day, I sat in the car in the parking lot for ten minutes, looking at the badge on my lanyard.
My name on it. My picture, squinting.
The internship was twelve of us in a building with no windows and very cold air.
