Chapter 10: The Parking Lot

Chandler didn't shut his car door.

He walked straight at me across the lot in his quarter-zip, sunglasses pushed up, keys still in his fist.

"Jules. What a coincidence."

"Move your car."

"He called me." He nodded at the tan brick building. "Two minutes ago. Lucky I was already on my way down to see him."

"Why were you on your way?"

"Because Davina told me you'd been asking about doctors." He smiled. "She tells me everything, Jules. You should've learned that by now."

Annabeth came around the van beside me.

"Hi, Chandler. Remember me? The maid of honor you said was too much?"

He didn't even look at her.

He held out his hand to me, palm up.

"Give me the phone."

"No."

"You recorded a doctor without his consent in a medical office. That's a crime in about six ways." His voice stayed easy, for anyone watching from the windows. "Give it to me and I'll forget it."

"North Carolina is a one-party state," I said. "I looked it up Sunday."

Something flickered in his eyes.

Then he moved.

He was faster than I'd have believed.

He caught my wrist and twisted, hard, and the phone came out of my fingers.

Pain shot up to my elbow.

I heard myself make a sound.

"Thank you," he said pleasantly, and turned toward the storm drain at the edge of the lot.

"Hey." Annabeth's voice had gone flat and quiet. "Chandler."

He turned his head.

She stepped in, took his wrist with both hands, did something sharp with her thumbs, and stamped on the inside of his knee.

He went down onto the asphalt.

The phone bounced once.

Annabeth snatched it off the ground and backed away holding it over her head.

Chandler was on one knee, grabbing his wrist, his face red.
