Chapter 29: Her Name on the Glass
The sign painter came on Tuesday at eight, before we opened.
He was a quiet old man in white overalls with a wooden case of brushes and a jar of gold leaf.
I'd asked him for one thing.
"Not a font," I said. "Her handwriting."
So he went out to the curb and stood by my van for twenty minutes with tracing paper held flat against the side, copying my mother's letters one by one.
BEXLEY FLOWERS, the way she'd painted it herself, standing on a milk crate, the year I turned four.
Then he came back in and started on the glass, backward, from the inside.
Annabeth and I stood on the sidewalk in our coats with the bakery's coffee and watched it come up letter by letter.
The B went on last.
The one the eviction notice had torn off.
When he pressed the gold leaf onto it and brushed it smooth, I had to turn around and look at the street for a minute.
"Hey." Annabeth bumped my shoulder with hers. "Hey. It's back."
"It's back."
"It looks better than before. Don't tell your mom."
I laughed and wiped my face on my coat sleeve.
