Chapter 4: Gardenias
I cut the gardenias at four on Sunday, the way I always did.
Twelve stems, white, wrapped in brown paper with green twine.
Annabeth watched me from the counter with her arms crossed.
"You're bringing him flowers. To the house where your husband and his girlfriend are eating pot roast."
"I've brought him flowers every Sunday for fourteen months."
"So skip one."
"He'll notice," I said. "He's the only one who ever does."
Truman's house in Eastover was red brick and white columns, with boxwoods trimmed square and a brass knocker shaped like a pineapple.
The housekeeper opened the door and looked at the gardenias, then at me, and stepped back without a word.
I heard Chandler's laugh before I saw him.
The dining room was set for five.
Truman sat at the head in his gray three-piece suit, his cane hooked on the arm of his chair, the silver bobbin handle shining.
Chandler was on his right in a navy quarter-zip.
On his left sat Davina, in a white blazer and gold hoops, with a pile of printed seating charts by her plate.
The chair beside Chandler was empty.
Mine.
"There she is." Truman held out his hand for the flowers. "Bring them here, girl. Let me smell them."
I put them in his hands.
He buried his nose in the paper and closed his eyes, like he did every week.
"Juliet, my God." Chandler stood, dimples out, and came around the table. "We were so worried. Jules, sit down. Davina's just helping with the seating for Pop's birthday."
"I can see what Davina's helping with."
Davina smiled at me over her water glass.
