Chapter 6: The Cooler

The woman with the sunflowers stopped halfway to the door.

Two girls by the succulents lowered their phones.

"Chandler," I said. "There are customers in here."

"Then they can help carry." He snapped his fingers at the movers. "Cooler first. The bell comes off the door, that's company property."

"The bell was my mother's."

"The bell's bolted to my building."

The locksmith knelt at the green door and opened his toolbox.

August took one step toward the counter.

I put my hand up without looking at him.

This was mine.

"Annabeth," I said. "The notice."

She already had it out of her apron pocket, the little folded square.

I unfolded it and walked over to the biggest mover, the one holding the dolly.

"Can you read this for me? Out loud. The part in bold."

He looked at Chandler.

The mover squinted at it anyway.

"Notice of termination. Tenant shall vacate the premises no later than November sixteenth."

"What's today?"

"The twenty-fourth?"

"Of October," I said. "And whose signature is that at the bottom?"

"Chandler Radford."

"That's him," I said, and pointed. "He gave me thirty days in writing last Friday. Today he brought you. If you touch one bucket in this shop, you're moving a tenant's property out of a lease she still has, in front of seven witnesses who are all filming."

The girls by the succulents lifted their phones higher.

The mover handed me the notice back and turned around.

"We're not doing this, Mr. Radford."

"I'm paying you."

"Not enough." He waved at the others. "Come on."

They took their dolly back out onto Central Avenue, and the locksmith went with them.

The sunflower woman started clapping.

Chandler's face went pink under his tan.

"Fine. Let's be adults." He spread his hands to the room. "Jules, you love this place. I get it. So here's the deal, in front of all your new friends. You go back to the clinic, you do the transfer on November third like we planned, and the building's yours. I'll sign it over the day the baby's born. Free and clear."
