Chapter 6: What Clayton Saw
Clayton came in at two in the morning without his flashlight.
I was lying on my side with my eyes open, listening to the pipes.
He shut the door nearly all the way and stood at the foot of the bed.
"I watched from the window," he said. "I saw him turn his head."
"Then you know."
"I know a baby wanted the sound of you." He rubbed the back of his neck. "That's not proof. But I've read your chart every night since the second week."
"The second week," I said.
"Yes."
"It's April."
He said nothing.
Thirty weeks. Thirty weeks of sedation notes and dose increases, and he had spent most of them in the hall.
I wanted to ask him what exactly he had been waiting for.
But he was the only person in that building with a key to anything, so I held my tongue.
"Your story never changes," Clayton said. "Not when you're sleepy, not when you're angry, not when you think nobody's writing it down. The day staff write 'delusion fixed.' I read 'consistent.' Delusions drift. Yours is the same every time, down to the time on the clock."
"Three-forty," I said. "He cried at three-forty."
"And Lacey told you seven-twelve."
"You heard that?"
