Chapter 24: The Cake Table

I did not answer the text.

I read it once, standing at the window in my slip, and set the phone face down on the dresser.

Bridget found me at six with the last layer in the oven and flour up to both elbows.

"You're not supposed to be baking," she said. "You're supposed to be crying in a robe."

Pilots in dress uniform, flight attendants in their blue scarves, and gate agents who had swapped shifts to be here.

The captain in the navy dress stood in the third row.

She lifted two fingers to me when I came to the door.

Mrs. Hartnett waited for me at the end of the aisle.

She wore silver-gray silk, and she carried her cane in her left hand and nothing in her right.

"I'm not a young woman," she said. "I'd like to be told where to walk."
