Chapter 15: Storm Warning
The storm came in off the lake on Tuesday at a quarter to seven, and the sky went the color of a bruise.
Ned and I had spent the afternoon lashing down the barn doors and dragging bins into the shed.
My mother had been in the kitchen since four, filling every pot she owned with water.
"The power will go," she said. "The power always goes."
"The power might not go."
"Lenka, I have lived here sixty-six years."
At seven the first gust hit the farmhouse, and the porch swing slammed into the wall.
Rain came sideways, in sheets.
I stood at the kitchen window and watched the trees in the near rows bend until their tops almost touched the grass.
Then I saw a gap in the line of them, and it was in the wrong place.
It was on the Hendry side, at the fence.
A huge old tree, one of the gray ones I had told Abram would surprise him, had split at the base.
It fell slowly.
It took the wire fence with it, and then it took my fence.
It lay across both properties in a mess of limbs.
The lights in the house went out.
