Chapter 17: Month Eight

Twelve faces swung down the table toward Jasper.

He stood up slowly, the way he did everything, and buttoned his jacket.

"My uncle is right," he said.

Leopold's eyebrows rose a quarter inch.

"I put a ring on a woman for your vote," Jasper said. "The engagement was a contract. I told you at my grandmother's house that I'd stake the company on her honesty, and that was true. I let you believe the ring was a promise, and that was not."

"I've lied to this board for fifteen days."

"Then the seat is vacant," said the man who had seconded the motion.

"It may be. I typed this last night."

He took a sheet of paper from his inside pocket and walked it the length of the room, past Lyle, past the window, and laid it in front of the treasurer.

"It's my resignation as chair," he said. "It's dated today. You can take it or not."

The treasurer didn't touch it.

"There's something else," Jasper said, and now he was looking at the walnut and not at any of us. "For two years you've read that I was left. Twice, by women who couldn't love me."
