Jasper had been gone for thirty-nine hours.
He had left my bed at four on the morning of the twenty-ninth of May, with his shoes in his hand.
He had left a note on the pillow.
I'm sorry. I need to walk. I'll be back.
I did not call him.
The April scan had come back clean, with only a faint shadow where the mass had been.
I had promised myself in October that I would never again run after a man who was leaving a room.
Now it was the thirtieth, a Sunday evening.
I stood in the second-floor dining room of the Holloway Grand, in the green silk dress.
Adelaide was eighty-three tonight.
She sat at the head of the long table in a sequined jacket, with her cane hooked on the chair.
Pickle lay under her feet.
My mother had taken the day off and driven down from Duluth in her good cardigan.
She sat beside me and watched the empty chair across the table.
