Chapter 12: The Study

Elliot was in the library when she got back, sitting by the fire with a closed book on his knee.

He had not been reading it. He stood the moment she came in.

"How was the tea?"

"Celia knew what I ate for lunch all week," Brittany said. "Dalton's driver followed me."

His face went very still.

"She said it to scare me," Brittany went on. "She said it kindly, which was worse."

"I'll have the driver found."

"I don't want him found. I want to ask you something."

He waited.

"Why did your sister leave university?"

The fire popped. Elliot did not move.

His face went blank.

"I don't talk about her," he said.

"Celia Hartwell said her name to me as a weapon. I think I'm owed more than that."

"She's not a story I tell so you can weigh my character."

"I'm not weighing anything. I'm asking."

"And I'm telling you no."

His voice was quiet and flat and he had turned his shoulder to her.

Brittany looked at the back of his head, at the short dark hair and the stiff line of his neck.

She knew silences. For six years she had lived with Dalton's.

His had been punishments.

This one was a man carrying something heavy and trying not to drop it in front of her.

"Okay," she said.

He turned.

"Okay?"

"You said no. I'm not going to push."

She crossed to the chair beside his and sat down.
