Chapter 15: What He Did

Elliot woke at five, which was when he always woke, and for the first time in four years he did not want to get up.

Brittany lay on her side with her back against his arm.

The stitches at her hairline were nearly healed, and a strand of chestnut hair had stuck to the edge of the line.

He lifted it away with one finger.

She stirred and did not wake.

He lay there and let himself look at her for a full minute, and then he got up quietly and went through the connecting door to the study.
