Chapter 16: The Clip

Elliot told her about the notice at breakfast, before she asked him anything.

He put the folded sheet on the table between the toast and the coffee and did not touch it again.

"If I file it on listing night, the company is worth nothing by morning," he said. "So is your thirty percent. I should have said so in the study."

Brittany read the sheet twice.

"You're telling me because your sister told you to."

His head came up.

"She called," he said. "Once."

"Good for her." Brittany pushed the notice back across the cloth. "I don't want it burned, Elliot. I want it taken. I want his name off the door and mine on the vote."

"That's a different plan."

"Then it's a better one. Keep the paper. Don't file it yet."

He kept it.

Then he showed her the tablet with the gala invitation, and the production order with Dalton's name on it.

"Whatever is on that screen, it's for you," he said. "We can stay home."

"No," said Brittany. "I want to see it."

The Meridian ballroom was dressed in white that night, with a stage at one end and a screen the width of the wall.

Celia stood at the podium in a long grey gown, the Hartwell Foundation's name glowing behind her.

Teddy sat on a gold chair beside the stage in a small suit, with a nanny's hand on his shoulder.

Brittany walked in on Elliot's arm in black, and the room turned to watch her.
