Chapter 18: The Moving Truck

Every light on the Strathern drive was burning at half past one in the morning.

A removal truck stood backed against the limestone steps with its rear doors open.

Two men in dark suits, the same relatives who had laughed on the lawn, were carrying a gilt-framed painting down to it between them.

Behind them, Marguerite stood in the doorway in a camel coat and pearls, directing with one gloved hand.

Brittany stepped out of the car before it had fully stopped.

Elliot got out on the other side. He did not hurry, and the way he stood told everyone on the gravel that he had not come to talk.

The staff were gathered at the edge of the lawn in nightclothes and coats.

The maid. The gardener. The old driver in his grey coat, with his cap in his hands.

"Mrs. Strathern," Brittany said.

Marguerite did not turn her head.

"Put that down," Brittany said, to the men with the painting.

They looked at Marguerite.

"It's mine," Marguerite said. "My husband gave me these pieces over twenty years. I am removing my belongings before a stranger damages them."

"Which pieces?"

"All of them."

"Then you'll have a list." Brittany held out her hand. "Show me."

"I do not need a list for my own marriage."

"The estate inventory is in the lawyer's office. The painting you are holding is item forty-one. It was in my father's study, and his will leaves it to his daughter."

She turned to the maid.

"Is that right?"
