Chapter 5: Terms of a Match

The same black car was waiting at the corner when Brittany left the villa.

Dalton thought she was meeting a realtor again. She had kissed his cheek and told him she'd be back for lunch.

The man who held the rear door was not in a uniform today. He wore a plain dark suit and sunglasses, and he nodded to her once.

"I'm Mr. Kincaid's assistant," he said. "You may call me that. He prefers I have no other name."

"That's a strange rule."

"It's a strange family."

The car pulled out smoothly, and the villa fell away behind them.

"Miss Faulkner, I'll tell you the proposal before we arrive."

"Why?"

"So you can say no in the car and save yourself the walk."

"Go ahead."

"The Kincaid family has asked the Stratherns for a marriage alliance. The Strathern line has the largest holding in the city. The Kincaids have the capital to protect it. Mr. Kincaid proposes that you and he marry for one year."

"For one year," she repeated.

"It's a business arrangement with a public face. Your father's father was told two nights ago. He has no objection."

"Nobody told me."

"That is what this drive is for."

Brittany looked at the river sliding by outside the window.

Two days ago she had been a woman with a taped-up certificate.

"Why me?" she said. "Your employer could marry anyone."

"He could," the assistant said. "I only recently came back to the country with him. I'm not privy to his reasons."
