Chapter 6: Discharge

I picked up the lawyer's card and read it.

Then I dropped it into my pudding.

"Unstable," I said. "Because I posted the time my daughter was born?"

"Because you're making accusations in public about a respected surgeon, hours after major surgery," the lawyer said. "Courts take a mother's mental state seriously."

"So do I. Mine's fine. His was at a party."

My mother-in-law sat down on the edge of the visitor's chair without being asked.

"Andie, dear, nobody wants a fight," she said. "You've been through something terrible. You need rest. Real rest."

"I'm in the ICU. It's very restful."

"Let me take the baby while you heal."

She said it so kindly.

Like she was offering to bring a casserole.

"I have the nursery all set up in Mt. Lebanon. Reece's old room. Kaitlyn helped me pick the wallpaper. Little ducks."

"Kaitlyn picked my daughter's wallpaper."

"She has wonderful taste. You know that."

"I know she was in a wedding dress on my husband while I was on a table."

My mother-in-law's mouth tightened.

"That was a joke, dear. Those two have always joked like that."

"He's thirty-three."

"Boys don't grow up. You knew that when you married him."

Ruthann had been leaning against the window this whole time, chewing slowly.

Now she pushed off it.

"Okay," she said. "Visiting hours are over."

"It's two in the afternoon," the lawyer said.

"In my ICU, visiting hours are over when the patient's pressure goes up. Look at that monitor."

They both looked.

My blood pressure was climbing in big green numbers.

"Out," Ruthann said, and held the door.

My mother-in-law stood up and picked up her handbag.

At the door she stopped and patted Ruthann's arm.

"I'll leave you be. But Andie, you shouldn't go back to that little house alone with a newborn."
