Chapter 13: Paragraph Nine

The state's attorney handed me the stapled paper, and her thumb had left a damp print on the corner.

I looked at paragraph nine.

I had read it four times in a lawyer's office, and once more at midnight in a hallway, and I knew it by heart.

The gallery had gone so quiet I could hear the clock that ran five minutes slow.

"Mrs. Garvey," said the judge. "You may decline."

"No, your honor."

I took off my glasses and held them in my left hand, so they would stop trembling where everyone could see.

"Paragraph nine," I read. "The parties shall keep separate bedrooms for the term of this agreement.

"No marital relations of any kind shall take place between them."

Somebody in the gallery laughed, and then stopped.

At the back, Lionel Lonergan took off his half-moon glasses and polished them on his tie, pleased.

"So you were not his wife, in the way the trust requires," said the state's attorney.

"I was his wife the way the paper says."

"And on Thursday night?"

"On Thursday night," I said, "I broke paragraph nine.

"I broke it on Sunday too, and Tuesday, and I'd break it again before this hearing is over if you'd let me."

The laughter came properly this time. The judge rapped, but he was fighting his own mouth.
