Chapter 24: Consultant
Rowan held the contract in both hands and tore it down the middle.
He tore the halves again, slowly, so I could watch paragraph nine go.
"They let me out at three," he said. "The state's attorney wants a plea to a misdemeanor and two hundred hours of whatever I'm told to do. I told her I'd start at Area Central, with the coffee."
"You'd burn the coffee."
"I would."
He put the pieces into my cardigan pocket, next to Frank's medal, and did not ask me to say anything.
Then he took something small out of his waistcoat and held it in his palm, between us.
A plain steel band, no stone. It matched his watch.
"I have a question," he said, "and I'd like you to give me the real answer. Not the one that's convenient. I've had enough of those."
"Rowan."
"Will you marry me?"
He didn't kneel. He stood on the wet planks of the pier where my partner had died, with the river going by, and waited.
I looked at the ring for a long time.
"No," I said.
His face did not move. His fingers closed, and then opened again.
"Thank you," Rowan said, very low. "That's the first honest answer anyone's given me in a month."
