Chapter 24: Bound
On Saturday the lake was flat and gray, and the pines on the bluff smelled of rain.
There were only six of us on the porch of the lake house.
Cinzia had come down from Buffalo on the early bus in a new wool coat, with her cast off and her wrist in a brace.
The old gray captain stood beside her with his hat in his hands.
The old doctor sat in his wheelchair at the end of the porch under a blanket.
The nurse stood behind him, and a tube ran to his nose.
"You said I'd live until Sunday," he whispered, when I bent to kiss his cheek. "That was three Sundays ago."
"I counted every breath," I said.
He smiled his thin smile.
I wore a plain white dress with sleeves, because the wind was cold, and Adriano wore a dark suit with no tie.
He had given me his tie.
I held the black silk one, the one I had once wound around his wrists, in my right hand.
"No priest," Adriano said, quietly, to the porch. "No fathers, no pact, no treaty."
"Just a woman who can walk away, and a man who is asking her not to."
I stepped in front of him.
The wind lifted my hair, and he looked at me as he had on the first night in the dress.
