Chapter 17: Captains
I didn't sleep that night.
At two in the morning I sat at Angelo's little kitchen table under the slanted ceiling and wrote on the back of a gym sign-up sheet.
He came and stood behind me in his sweatpants and read over my shoulder.
"You're making a list."
"I'm a nurse. We make lists."
"A nursing assistant," he said. "She wipes people."
I elbowed him in the stomach.
He grunted and didn't move.
There were three lines on the paper.
Name a boss who takes this family off the dock's blood.
Prove who killed Dad, in front of everybody.
Pass my boards on December nineteenth.
Angelo read it twice.
"That third one's the hardest," he said.
"You think?"
"The first two, you've got me. The third one, you're on your own." He pulled out the other chair and sat. "Who's on your list for the first one?"
"Nobody yet."
"Good. Because none of them deserve it."
"Then I have to meet them," I said. "All four captains. One at a time. In their own places, not in a library with my mother."
He looked at me for a long moment.
