Chapter 18: Expressway
I folded the paper in half and put it in my pocket.
"Tell Paulie I got it," I said.
"That's all?" the old captain said.
"That's all he gets."
On Tuesday night I went to Gladwyne to see my mother.
Angelo drove me in his black pickup and waited in the circle drive with the engine running.
The housekeeper let me in.
She went upstairs to the blue guest room and came back down alone.
"She says she doesn't have a daughter named Riley," the housekeeper said. Then, lower, "She's not eating. She sits by the phone."
"Whose call is she waiting for?"
The housekeeper looked at the floor.
I left a bag of my mother's favorite lemon cookies on the hall table and went back out to the truck.
"Well?" Angelo said.
"She has one daughter."
He didn't say anything.
He reached over and buckled my seat belt for me, which he'd never done before.
The Schuylkill was black and nearly empty at eleven at night.
Angelo kept checking the mirror.
"Somebody's been behind us since Conshohocken," he said.
