Chapter 22: Fallen

He did not go for Rorik.

I saw it in the turn of his shoulders and the angle of the blade.

A dead healer meant a dead king.

He had the whole hall looking at the throne, and he was going for me.

The dagger came at my ribs.

I did the only thing I knew how to do with a man who is trying to hurt someone.

I caught his wrist with both hands.

Seven years of lifting men off cots had given me arms.

His bones were old and dry, and I felt the tendon give.

Gisbert Rook screamed, a thin high sound that nobody in that hall had ever heard from him.

I twisted, and the dagger rang off the stone.

He grabbed at my braid with his other hand.

Rorik's boot came down on the step beside mine.

I did not wait for him.

I put my shoulder into the old man's chest and shoved.

He went backward off the edge of the top step, his rings flashing, and the seven stone stairs took him one at a time.

I heard each one.

He fetched up at the bottom, on his back, beside the Moon's bowl.

His legs lay under him at the wrong angle.
