Chapter 18: The Second Drum

"Mick," Shawn said. "Mick, please."

The sergeant looked from him to Mickey.

"You know this guy?"

"I dated him for two years," Mickey said. "His prints are on your evidence."

Shawn flinched.

Vin stepped half in front of Mickey.

"Who did that to your face?" he said.

Shawn laughed, and it split his lip open again.

"Who do you think? Your uncle. Sunday night, in the back of the van, with two of his guys holding my arms."

"Why?"

"Because his drill crew got locked in a cage by a pregnant locksmith." Shawn looked at Mickey. "And I'm the one who told them how to get in."

He'd said it in a police station lobby, out loud.

"Not here," Mickey said.

They took him to the shop.

Aoife opened the green door, saw Shawn's face, and said, "Good."

Then she looked closer, sighed, and went to get the ice.

Shawn sat on the stool by the key machine with a bag of frozen peas on his eye.

Vin stood by the door.

Mickey stood behind his dad's bench, because it was his and he wanted it between them.
