Chapter 21: Not Forgiveness

Mickey held the stub up to the light by the folding table.

"Pie," he said.

"Pietro," Vin said. "He wrote my uncle's name and somebody tore it out."

The man with the scar was gone. His car was gone.

But he'd made a phone call from that room, and they both knew who'd picked up.

They drove back to Milwaukee Avenue with the ledger on Mickey's knees.

Neither of them said anything for twenty minutes.

Then, on the Eisenhower, Vin said, "You emptied your father's account."

"Yes."

"For my family's book."

"For my father's name."

"I could have paid it with what's in my coat pocket."

"I know." Mickey looked out the window. "That's why you didn't."

Vin's jaw went hard.

He didn't answer until they were parked in front of the shop.

The driver got out to smoke without being asked.

"I can't do anything," Vin said.

"You won't let me pay. You won't let me call a lawyer. You won't let me stand between you and my uncle's men."

"I sat in a station for eleven hours and watched them fingerprint you. I sat in a chair across the street for two weeks."

"And?"

"And I don't know what I'm for." Vin's voice cracked on it.

"I don't know what you want from me, Mickey. Tell me, and I'll do it."

Mickey turned in the seat to face him.

"I want to know what you think you did," he said. "Not sorry. I don't need sorry. I want the list."

Vin looked at him for a long moment.

Then he gave it to him.

He didn't look away once.

"I told a detective a good man's death was an accident, at six in the morning, without asking one question."

"I told every Family your father was a thief. I said it at the Table with my hand on the walnut."

"I took your family's work away. I let your sister grow up behind a counter with no money."

"I knew the fall was wrong the night you found the note, and I took you upstairs before I told you."

"I made you find out from Shawn."

He stopped.

"That's the list," he said.

"And what have you done since?"

"Told eleven of your father's old clients that my Family lied. Two came back. I'll tell the rest."
