Chapter 21: The Funeral
I stepped over the wet place on the grass and kept walking.
I didn't look at the old capo, and I didn't need to.
Behind me, Rafe's shoes hit the gravel in the same rhythm as mine.
By four o'clock the long table in the Gold Coast dining room was full.
Twelve capos sat along it in black suits, with their wives in the next room and the food going cold on the sideboard.
We called them the Table, because that was where my father had kept them.
Each of them ran a piece of the city for the family.
At the far end stood the head chair, with its carved arms and the dent in the leather where my father's cane had hung.
Nobody sat in it.
Everyone looked at it.
Marisa stood at my elbow in her good gray dress.
"Sit," she said softly. "Before they decide that for you."
