Chapter 5: Three A.M.

Rafe was dressed in moments.

He pulled on the sweatpants, then a clean pair of black trousers over them, and he buckled the gun at his hip.

I stood in the middle of his room with my slip in my hand and my hair wrecked.

"Back through the door," he said.

"Rafe."

"Now."

He pushed the black sweatshirt from his chair into my arms.

I dragged it over my head.

It hung to my thighs and smelled like him.

I stepped through the connecting door, and he shut it behind me.

The lock turned.

I stood in the dark with my back against the oak, my heart going wild.

Footsteps came up the stairs.

They were slow, even, and not hiding.

My father's night guard had let Silvio in, because a fiance doesn't wait at the gate.

I crossed to my bedroom door and opened it before he could knock.

Silvio stood in the hall in a camel overcoat with his tie loose and a smile on his face.

His hand was wrapped in white gauze from where my fork had gone through it.

"There she is," he said. "My bride."

"It's three in the morning."

"I couldn't sleep."

"Then count something."

He looked me up and down.

His eyes stopped on the sweatshirt, and the edge of my slip hanging under it.

"Cold?" he said.

"Yes."

"That's a man's shirt."

"It's my father's," I said.

"Is it."

He stepped into the doorway, so close I smelled the liquor on his breath.

It was only a drink or two.
