Chapter 21: Doug
Doug walked down the driveway into the floodlights in his camel overcoat, a garment bag over one shoulder.
He stopped at the edge of the rink.
He looked at the ice. At the bench. At the quilt around both of us.
At my bare feet in Tate's slides.
"Well," he said. "Isn't this sweet."
Tate didn't take his arm off me.
"You're back early," he said.
"She put me on a plane." Doug's voice was mild. "The owner. Eleven o'clock flight. She wants me in her office Monday at eight, with a lawyer."
He looked up at the window over the garage. The lamp was still on.
"In my house," he said. "Under my roof. With my wife asleep."
"Mom gave us the key," I said.
Something moved behind his eyes.
He turned and walked up the back steps into the kitchen without another word.
We followed him in.
Doug set the garment bag on a stool. He took his coat off and folded it over the bag. He took his ring off and set it on the counter, the way he had in his office.
