Chapter 22: The Widow's Settlement
The morning papers ran one photograph on every front page.
It showed Silvan Ravenscroft on the Dray lawn in a black suit, with his cane in his hand and the whole city staring at him.
The headline underneath said, "THE DEAD HEIR WALKS."
Linnet read it standing in the Ravenscroft hall with a cup of tea going cold in her hand.
The gate outside had been busy since dawn.
Reporters stood on the road, and florists, and neighbors, and a man selling flags.
At eight the housekeeper came in and said, "Mr. Dray is here. He asks to see you, and he is alone."
Linnet put down her cup.
Mr. Dray stood on the gravel by the oak, in a gray coat, with his hat in one hand and a thick folder in the other.
He looked ten years older than he had at the club.
"Miss Orsey," he said. "I mean, Mrs. Ravenscroft. I will not take much of your time."
"You can have a minute."
"My son is in a cell." His voice cracked. "I have asked the bank's lawyers to talk to the police. I will testify that the patent pledges were forged, and that my son forged them."
"Why?"
"Because I am a banker, and I do not stand behind forgeries." He held out the folder with both hands. "These are the original Orsey Looms filings. They were in my safe. They are your mother's."
Linnet took the folder.
It was heavy, and the corners were soft with handling.
"Thank you," she said.
"Don't thank me." His eyes were wet. "I had a son, and I never once asked what he was doing with the Orsey accounts."
