Chapter 4: Terms
Madam Ravenscroft did not look surprised when she found Linnet in her grandson's room at seven the next morning.
She stood in the doorway with the rosary in one hand and a folder in the other.
"I told you not to open that door," she said.
"You told me you picked me from a birth chart," Linnet said. "I'd like the real reason now."
She had not slept.
Silvan sat by the window in a fresh shirt with the cane across his knees, and he did not say a word in his own defense.
Madam sat down across from them and set the folder on the table.
"Sit," she said.
Linnet sat.
"The accident was not an accident," Madam said. "The brake line on his car was cut."
The room was very quiet.
"Someone cut it and stood back and watched," Madam said. "My people found him in the river and brought him here before any doctor could write his name down."
"Why hide him?" Linnet said. "Why not call the police?"
"Because the person who wanted him dead is someone who can still smile at my table," Madam said. "If he believes the job is finished, he will relax."
"And if he learns Silvan is breathing, he tries again," Silvan said.
His voice was flat and tired.
Linnet looked at him, and then she looked at the folder.
"And the wife?" she said.
"The Ravenscroft shares pass to a living spouse," Madam said. "If my grandson dies unmarried, they pass to a board, and the board can be bought. I need a widow who will sit on those shares and sign nothing."
"A name on a paper," Linnet said.
"A name I can trust to say yes to my face and mean it," Madam said. "Yesterday you did."
"The birth chart?"
"I don't believe in birth charts," Madam said. "I believe in a girl who crosses a lawn in a creased party dress to tell a man to get off it."
