Chapter 14: Mrs. Reece
I drove to the rental in my uniform with the windows down and my hands strangling the wheel.
The white van was backed into the driveway with its ramp lowered, and PINEWOOD was painted on the side in friendly green letters.
Two women in lavender scrubs stood beside it with a clipboard.
The Hendersons were on their porch, not even pretending to water anything.
Colby came down the front steps with a small flowered suitcase in one hand.
His mother stood in the doorway behind him in her blue robe, with her good wool coat buttoned wrong over it.
She had put on two different shoes.
"Sade," Colby said, pleasant, loud, for the porch. "This is a family matter."
"Where is she going?"
"Somewhere with a nurse on every shift. You said yourself she wandered into the road."
"I said be nice to her."
"I am being nice."
He turned to the women in scrubs and gave them the warm, reasonable voice.
"She gets confused about who lives here. It's best if the transition is smooth."
The older of the two women looked from him to me to the old woman in the doorway.
