Chapter 13: The Cold Room
The cloth smelled like motor oil and old cigarettes.
I kicked, and a forearm locked across my collarbone until I stopped.
"Easy, sweetheart," said a voice I knew. "Nobody wants a scene on Orla's street."
"Declan."
"Hello, Neve."
Someone pulled my wrists together in front of me and a plastic tie bit down.
In front, not behind.
I had worn a gray wool dress to Orla's table, and a dress has no pockets.
My phone was where it always was behind a bar, tucked in my bra.
The car rolled forward.
I turned my face down into my collar under the bag and said it as quietly as I could.
"Call Ronan."
Against my breastbone the phone gave one small buzz.
I could not hear a ring and I could not hear him.
All I could do was talk.
The ride took ten minutes by the turns.
Then there were steps down, and a door that smelled of beer, and a cold that went through the wool.
They sat me on something hard and pulled the bag off.
