Chapter 11: The Gate

The Hargate estate sat behind a black iron gate at the end of a mile of oak trees.

Scott braked in front of it so hard I hit the dashboard with my palms.

Two guards stood inside, in dark jackets, with their arms folded.

"Mr. Hargate isn't receiving visitors," said one.

"My son is in that house," Scott said through the window.

"He's a leukemia patient who was dragged out of a hospital in the middle of treatment," Scott said.

"Mrs. Hargate has custody," the guard said.

"Open the gate," Scott said.

"I can't do that," the guard said.

Scott turned off the engine.

He took out his phone and typed with his thumbs, fast, and then he looked at me.

"What did you do?" I asked.

"Called the clubhouse."

For a minute nothing happened.

Then I heard engines.

A black SUV came up the road behind us, then a pickup truck, then two more cars.

Men started getting out in team jackets and ball caps, eleven or twelve of them.

Their wives and girlfriends climbed out behind.

I recognized the catcher.

I recognized the first baseman, and the closer with the red beard.

They walked up the drive and stood along the iron bars in a line.

Behind them a white news van pulled in, and then another.

A woman in a blue jacket was already clipping a microphone to her collar.

Marge climbed out of the second pickup with a rolling pin in one hand.

"What?" she said, when I stared. "I was bringing him dinner."

The guards looked at each other.

One of them took a radio off his belt and spoke into it quietly.
