Chapter 20: Fever

Jamie's temperature hit one hundred and four at midnight.

They moved him to the sealed room at the end of the ward, the one with two doors and a sink you had to scrub at for three minutes.

We stood in paper gowns and masks, and I couldn't stop looking at his small flushed face.

"His white count is almost nothing," the doctor said. "The chemo has taken his defenses. Whatever this infection is, his body can't fight it."

"What do you need?" Scott asked.

"Antibiotics, the strongest we have. And a quiet room."

"Can he hear us?"

"Probably."

I sat down on the stool beside the bed and took his hand through the glove.

It burned.

"Jamie," I said. "It's me. Brynn. I'm right here."

His lips moved.

"Mom," he mumbled.

I froze.

I didn't know which one he meant.

Then he turned his head toward the door, and I understood.

The nurse's alarm hadn't been what woke him.
