Chapter 22: The Opening Pitch

The doctor let my son go home on a gray Friday, thirty-one days after the transplant.

The next day, a Saturday, she cleared him for exactly one inning of baseball.

"Masks on," she said, pointing at each of us. "No hugging the crowd. No hot dogs. He sits behind glass the second he's done."

"Can he throw the first pitch?" Scott asked.

"If he doesn't run."

"I won't run," Jamie promised, with a hand on his heart.

He was very thin, and his hair was coming back in a soft dark fuzz.

He wore a Herons cap that had been taken in with a safety pin, and a mask with a baseball print on it.

I walked beside him through the tunnel under the stands.

It was the same tunnel where I had once told myself I could scrub floors here.

I had thought I would never see his face.
